The Baptism of Jesus

John the Baptist now fulfils the role foretold before his birth (see Chapter 5) and the prophecy of Isaiah 40:3–5 as he appears in the desert to prepare the people for the arrival of God’s Messiah, a long-hoped-for event promised in the Old Testament. He announces that the time of God’s coming to rule (and of his judgement on wrongdoing) is near and that all must be baptised in the River Jordan as a sign of cleansing and willingness to change both attitudes and behaviour. To John’s surprise, Jesus himself comes to ask for baptism, as a sign of identification with the people he has come to save. As Jesus emerges from the river, the Holy Spirit appears from heaven in the form of a dove. Jesus is empowered for his task and affirmed as the Son of God in words from the Old Testament (Ps 2:7; Isa 42:1).
